Night falls over a windy landscape. Dirt whirls up in the shape of a formidable air current, obscuring the path ahead. For twelve long years, we've barely survived trying to cross what's left of the country. Night is always getting longer. Night is always the hardest. I used to take some small comfort in the stars, thinking to myself that they were all witness to every awful thing that's happened in the universe...that they knew me, and could relate to me. If only I knew now, what I knew then. Through this storm, there must be a clearing. A place where burgeoning night is shoved aside by the holiest of holies, a chorus of suns. A temple of all that is white, light and good. A dawn of dawns. And I will take us there, into that bright light, and we will feel its warmth, and eat apples and sing songs. We'll be happy. We'll be safe.
